Analgesic, diuretic, emmenagogue, antispasmodic, tonic, nervine, astringent, expectorant. Its mild vasodilating effects are employed in menses cramps associated with a delayed flow or scanty menstruation. its nervine properties find benefit in PMS and some menopausal symptoms; used postpartum, it helps to drain the uterus and prevent infections. Also used as a general heart tonic in men and women, where it is calmative. Useful in overactive thyroid conditions when combined with Bugleweed (Lycopus virginica) and Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis).
