Only the dried root of the American Mandrake is safe enough to use internally. Even then, it is a strong cathartic and laxative, to be used with extreme caution, only under professional guidance. Do not use in pregnancy. The European variety contains several alkaloids, including the strongly hallucinogenic, narcotic, anodynes atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. The leaves were once applied externally to ulcers, while the root formerly had wide application in the relief of pain, in the treatment of nervous disorders and as an aphrodisiac. Much of the information surrounding Mandrake is superstition.
